Why Families Love Trunk or Treat

Last Friday night the girls had Trunk or Treat at their school and we had a great time. This is about the 3rd or 4th year we go to Trunk and Treat and I’m always amazed at the creativity that everyone comes up with to decorate their car trunks for Halloween.

While we definitely love traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating and plan on going this year, a lot of kids look forward to their annual "Trunk or Treat" events and this has been gaining more popularity in recent years. This family-friendly event offers a safe and enjoyable way to celebrate Halloween, especially for parents with younger children.

What is Trunk or Treat?

Trunk or Treat is a Halloween event where kids and their families gather in a designated area, like a parking lot or a community space, and decorate their car trunks with themed Halloween decorations. The trunks are loaded with candy, treats and sometimes even games and toys. Most of the time kids will dress up in their costumes and the way it works is they move from one car to the next (that’s the “trunk or treat” part, collecting candy.

Here’s why families love Trunk or Treat:

An Alternative to Traditional Trick-or-Treating That’s Safe and Gives Parents Ease of Minde

One of the main reasons families love the idea of a Trunk or Treat is the safety. Traditional trick-or-treating can be nerve-wracking for both parents and children especially if they’re worried about traffic, strangers, and dark streets. Trunk or Treat offers a secure environment where parents can easily keep an eye on their kids.

Expression of Creativity

Another great aspect of Trunk or Treat is the opportunity for creativity. Unlike traditional trick-or-treating, where the focus is primarily on costumes, Trunk or Treat allows families to get very creative. A lot of times, the folks decorating the car trunk will choose a specific theme and let that dictate how they decorate. We’ve seen some amazing trunks and they get more creative with each year.

Community Building

Trunk or Treat events foster a sense of community spirit. In addition to schools, local businesses, churches, and neighborhood associations often host these events, bringing people together and strengthening the bonds within the community. It's an excellent opportunity to meet your neighbors and make new friends, all while enjoying the fun Halloween spirit.

Inclusivity for All Ages

One of the best aspects of Trunk or Treat is its inclusivity. While Halloween traditions like haunted houses or scary movies may be too intense for younger kids, Trunk or Treat events provide a family-friendly atmosphere that accommodates kids of all ages. Whether you have babies and toddlers or a teenager, there's something for everyone.
